Need Auto Insurance? How Much Insurance Is Enough

By: Laura Buckley

To some people cars are an expression of themselves and yet to some a car is just a means to get them from one place to another. However or whatever your car means to you, you need to carry proper and adequate coverage. Auto insurance has many variables and options to select from in terms of comprehensive, collision, medical, liability and uninsured motorist coverage. Most people don't realize that. There is such a thing as minimum coverage versus full coverage. With that said, how do you know for sure how much insurance is really enough to carry? I have some tips to help you sort it all out.

Just in case you're not sure of this statement I'm about to make but auto insurance companies will blend several types of coverage into one policy. What does that mean exactly to you? Well typically, your policy will include some combination of comprehensive, collision, medical, liability and uninsured motorist coverage. Each one of those components means a different thing and come at a variety of cost levels. It is the law to carry at least some form of minimum liability on all cars. This usually is where you would like the amount to be a bit higher than the required minimum just for your own financial protection.

So what do you need in terms of auto insurance? It greatly depends on your specific situation and the type of car you drive.

1. Liability pays for the damage you cause to others if your car is involved in an accident. It also protects you from being wiped out financially if you are sued following an accident.

2. Collision covers damage to your car from an accident. It might not be worth paying $300 a year for collision insurance on a car that's worth only $1,500. But if the car is worth $12,000, you probably want this coverage.

3. Comprehensive coverage for pays for your car if it is stolen, vandalized or damaged in some way other than in a collision.

4. Medical coverage provides for medical expenses to you and your passengers that are the result of an accident.

Keep in mind that many states require certain minimum levels of coverage and if the bank still holds the title on that new car you just purchased then the bank requires that you carry the maximum of all components of coverage. This is where the rates will vary and can become higher to pay than that of an old beat up station wagon that has no value. The type of car you drive or lease greatly affects the level of coverage you have to carry.

The best advice is to sit down with insurance agents or do it over the internet and get several quotes so that you know just where you stand with different carriers. Rates do vary from state to state as well as driving history and age of yourself and the car you are looking to insure or carry less coverage for. Always shop and compare and always get your quotes in writing.
